WXDU, as a member of the Duke University Union, exists to inform, educate, and entertain both the students of Duke University and the surrounding community of Durham through quality progressive alternative radio programming. WXDU seeks to give its staff the freedom to pursue their personal aesthetic within the framework of a cohesive format. WXDU aims to provide the listener with an alternative viewpoint untainted by commercial interests. WXDU resolves to maintain good relations with the music industry without compromising its integrity and nationally recognized commitment to quality programming. WXDU resolves to remain a laboratory where all members are free to make and learn from their mistakes.

Then at 6:30, With Good Reason explores the impact of music in an episode called "Here We Come A Caroling." In this episode, host Sarah McConnell speaks with a music therapist to learn why music is so integral to the holiday season. The pair also discusses an all-female a cappella group that addresses the issues facing young women, the Sephardic Jewish song tradition behind one accordionist's work and the Virginia Military Institute band's quest for the Tournament of the Roses Parade.

Up first tonight at 6:00, Helen Yu profiles the Inside-Outside Alliance on Discovering Durham. The Inside-Outside Alliance is a community organization that advocates for current and former Durham County jail inmates and their families. On this episode, Helen sits down with Cynthia Fox, a member of the Inside-Outside Alliance whose son was previously incarcerated in Durham County, and Steve Lorenze, one of the organization's founders.

Then at 7:00, we join BackStory with the American History Guys for a look at religion in America. On "American Prophets: Religions Born in the U.S.," the Guys examine both the impact and evolving face of this nation's spirituality, from the Pilgrims' immigration to America in search of religious freedom, to the conversion of Native Americans to Christianity, to the effect of the Civil Rights Movement on African American faith.

First at 6:00 tonight, we join Deutsche Welle's Inside Europe for the stories behind the major European headlines. This week's show examines the responses of EU leaders and football fans to the attacks in Paris, the effect of Russia's assessment of the Metro jet crash on international relations, the renewed fears of European Muslims, Syrian refugees' evolving paths of entry into Europe and the modern relevance of the Dayton peace agreement.

Then at 7:00, BackStory with the American History Guys gets us ready for Turkey Day with a look at the holiday's past, in "American as Pumpkin Pie: A History of Thanksgiving." On this episode, the Guys uncover the true origins of the holiday as they discuss the role of Thanksgiving Day football play, compare the modern Thanksgiving feast with the fare the Pilgrims would have eaten, trace the tradition of granding a turkey a presidential pardon, and more.

On tonight's show, Ike Rofe reports with a wrap-up of the Duke men's final exhibition game, plus their first regular-season game with comments from Coach K. Then Angelo Moreno's got a recap of yesterday's Blue Devils football loss to the Pittsburgh Panthers, including post-game comments from players and Coach Cutcliffe. Next up, Martin's got the latest on first-round NCAA women's soccer tournament action with Duke's 5-0 win over James Madison Friday, along with post-game interviews with players and Coach Robbie Church. Finally, Martin will report on the Duke women's basketball squad after Friday's winning start to regular season play, with post-game comments from the team's last exhibition match-up against Saint Leo from Duke Coach Joanne McCallie and second-season Saint Leo Coach Missy West, a former Blue Devils player who helped the team capture two ACC titles.

Veteran's Day is Wednesday, November 11, and tonight on WXDU, we'll share two programs that profile the experiences of American veterans.

First at 6:00, in "Coming Home: Stories of Veterans Returning from War," State of the Re:Union explores the challenges modern service members experience when they return home from active duty in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Then at 7:00, Rumble Strip Vermont shares the stories of four World War II veterans who were taken as prisoners of war in the Battle of the Bulge in "Prisoners of War, The Battle of the Bulge."

 

Handsome Family Special on Close Up The Honky Tonks! 11/7/15: 12-2 pm EDT

DJ Robby will be hosting "Close Up The Honky Tonks" this Saturday, November 7, starting at noon EDT, featuring 2 hours of the Handsome Family. Robby's had a long history with these guys;  he'll be playing a ton of their hits and a few of their misses. Plus a few gems from cassettes Brett sent him many years ago. You'll hear stuff no one outside the band has heard, and maybe some that even the band themselves don't know about. If there's time, he might even spin one or two from Brett's pre-Handsome Family groups (Albuquerque's own Sleep and the Gargantuans), which may or may not feature this very DJ!
